Does he have feelings for me but is saying the friendship is more important ?

ive been friends with a guy 2 years. we get on really well. ive done a lot for him and been a support to him. recently we spoke about dating and he said it wouldnt be a good idea to date in case it went wrong and we lost our friendship which he says he values enormously. i wasnt sure how to take this so asked him again recently and he said put it this way if our friendship hadnt become so strong and i first met you i would definitely date you as youre my type. is this a good thing hes saying please help
