What's the point in wearing a huge chain around the neck?

i heard vato by snoop dogg and he said "talking about they gon get my chain and they gonna leave with it" or even in "get rich or die tryin'" Majestic said that losing the chain is like walking the wrong way...is there any serious thing about it or is it just like showing off that you got enormously rich?
